Surfing workouts that improve physical strength combined with flexibility and endurance can dramatically affect how you look and feel in the water. Surfing itself is a great workout and if your in the water regularly, may be all you need. However, as you can see in this video below surfing itself can be both harsh and rewarding and the stronger your body is the better you will be able to consistently perform.

Land based surfing workouts keep you focused on your surfing and are specifically tailored to improve functional surfing movements, so that when you enter the water, you can apply techniques trained on land (balance, timing and power etc,) to enhance in water performance.
