As a human being that surfs, you are probably just like me and want to be able to surf ‘forever’. You probably also want to be able to keep up with the groms and catch loads of great waves every time you paddle out.
Focus on these following points (in order of relevance) from Evans, Ph.D. and Rosenberg M.D from the Tufts University aging study so you know what fundamentals to include into your surfing workout regime to keep you as young as possible.
1. Muscle Mass
2. Strength
3. Basal Metabolic Rate
4. Fat Percentage
5. Aerobic Capacity
6. Blood Sugar Tolerance
7. Cholesterol HDL/LDL Ratio
8. Blood Pressure
9. Bone Density
10. Temperature Regulation
As you can see the top 5 can only be obtained through your lifestyle. No doctor can prescribe these fundamentals to better aging. The entire list are all positively influenced by exercise at the right intensity.
So, if you want to catch loads of waves in the future and surf strong for life, always remember that the way you live your life will alter how your genes operate. You have a lot of power within you.
Exercise and surf specific training is the one thing that provides very fast returns on your investment. Better mental states, more confidence and enhanced strength can all improve in as little as a few weeks – along with better quality sleep and energy for your surfing.
Surfing Fitness Can Be Made Fun
Remember that exercise doesn’t have to be a ‘chore’ or require ‘all out intense effort’. This often actually depletes energy and motivation. I believe all surfing fitness and training’s wants to be positive for your physiology and psychology. That means at the end of each training session you want to feel invigorated; not depleted.
