Guessing Can Never Beat Testing
When it comes to surfing performance and nutrition there are simple lab tests that can provide you with valuable information regarding what nutrients will benefit you and what will harm you. We like to think we know what is good (or not good) for us, but time and time again I have seen that guessing leaves many people choosing foods that they think are ‘good’ for them but are the exact opposite to what tests reveal.
Testing is the only way to truly ascertain what is going on inside your body and find out where there may be hidden stress and what is happening at a hormonal level. It is also the best way to find out what systems of the body are struggling, what foods you may be reactive to, and if digestion and nutrient assimilation is compromised, etc. (Very common in the 21st C) This information is invaluable because once you know what is happening inside, can you know with 100% certainty, what actions to take to increase surfing performance, energy and your health. Testing beats guessing.

Sugar is Powerful Drug & Fat is Your Friend
Sugar is important for any surfers brain and body – and sugar is also your enemy. All carbohydrates eventually get broken down into sugar (glucose) yet that processed white stuff in nearly every man-made product in our ‘modern’ world, is feeding internal fungus, creating addictions, destroying health, making people fat and essentially killing people. Sugar comes in various forms and even the natural forms from Fruits and Vegetables wants to be consumed in moderation for many people. The right type and amount of carbohydrate (think sugar) in the right surfer, is fantastic, in the wrong surfer, devastating.
Avoiding man made sugars will greatly assist in being a strong, energetic and healthy surfer for life. You can get plenty of energy and highly dense nutrients (with fiber) by focusing on eating what naturally grows. (Point 1- visit the first blog) By adding more essential fats into your diet you can also help reduce cravings for sugar while helping improve your health, satiety and blood sugar levels. Good fats are your friends and critical for fat soluble vitamins (D E K A) to function, provide valuable nutrients and are apart of the cellular structure of joints and organs inside your body along with maintaining healthy skin and hair. (Even if you are bald like Mya!)
Cold pressed virgin olive oil, coconut oil, quality omega 3’s along with fish oils, avocados, eggs, and organic meats and nuts can be apart of your daily diet. Take care with too much flax seed, cashews, walnuts, peanuts or sunflower seeds because like soy / tofu they can increase estrogenic properties in some people. Just an Observation: Have you ever noticed that people who constantly grab ‘sugary’ or ‘energy’ drinks usually lack energy and have poor mental and physical health?
Surfing Nutrition Points – Wrapping Up
Surfers expend a tone of energy in the water – especially if they catch lots of waves (let that be you) so prioritizing food as being an important part of your surfing training is vital. In order to ‘Let Food Be Your Medicine and Medicine Be Your Food‘ remember there is no ‘right’ diet for every surfer. Also remember that, ‘things change’. In fact, the only constant in life; is that change is inevitable. So as you deal with the process of change I encourage you to tune in and listen to the clues your body gives you so that you can look out for yourself.
As far as nourishing yourself nutritionally goes, work on the ratio of Proteins, Fats and Carbohydrates for each meal that seems ‘right’ for your ongoing performance. The power of nutrition is crucial if you are to be at your best both in and out of the surf. If you have low energy, can’t seem to drop body fat or put on lean muscle – it could be that that your hormonal system is not functioning as it was designed and your food intake can and will dramatically influence what is happening.
