If someone says surfing fitness is not important or you don’t need to be strong; think again. This is especially true for women who play on the exact same grounds and conditions as their male counterparts. In general, women surfers are often more aware of their surfing fitness because they compete with guys to catch waves every time paddle out. They tend to also understand and tune in with their bodies and use surfing exercises more than males, perhaps this is why the number of talented surfing women has increased dramatically over the last few years.
Women who surf know that their fitness requirements will be tested in the surf and surfing exercises keep their bodies in good health while enabling them to out paddle and dare I say it – out smart and out paddle some men! Upper body strength and endurance are key elements for women surfers to develop so they can improve their wave count and continually improve as female surfing athletes in the water.
I have trained many athletes and the women who tune in with their bodies and get some surfing exercise into their regime greatly benefit from more power and endurance in the water. This is crucial because getting out the back consistently is seriously affected by paddling power and upper body strength.
Regardless if you are male or female, surfing exercises will boost your surfing fitness and performance in the water.
