Stretching for Stronger Surfing
Recently the Thai National Surfing Federation, asked me to help prepare their best surfing athletes, for the 2019 World Surfing Championships and the 2019 South East Asian Games. The Sports Authority of Thailand were interested in how to train for such a unique sport, and what priorities needed to be implemented, to build stronger surfing athletes.
In the upcoming months, I will introduce you to the Thai National Surf Team athletes and keep you posted on what we are doing, to prepare for the 2019 surfing championships. I will also provide insights into the surfing training and coaching methods, utilized to improve performance.

Of course, there are many factors to consider as surfing requires tremendous co-ordination, courage and skill. However, one quickly realizes that flexibility impacts every surfing athlete, and that performance in the surf, is always impacted by how one’s body can move on land.
So we started by, ‘going back to basics’ and regularly stretching out any area’s of tightness (think weakness) in each surfers body. This is such a simple concept, yet often over looked by many athletes. Restoring physiological balance within the musculoskeletal system, not only increases flexibility for function, it also reduces the likelihood of injury, increases energy levels and helps with mental focus for competition.
To improve surfing flow, I teach athletes to think about creating flow throughout their entire bodies. This cannot happen if area’s are restricted or immobile. To really understanding this, we participated in a Yoga Republic FLOW class with Jack Farras, who has worked alongside many surfing athletes in Bali. Jack demonstrated that correctly taught Yoga, is a brilliant way for athletes to understand themselves, and know what area’s to work on to improve athletic performance.
Who ever you are – if you want to perform better, find area’s of weakness or tightness in your body and stretch out – doing this regularly will lead to a stronger and more flexible body – and that my friends, is great for everyone.
